Anonymous Chat, Built Right
We built LurkCam after Omegle shut down — because the world still needed a place to meet strangers without surrendering personal data to a platform.
The problem
Omegle closed in November 2023. Its founder wrote a farewell letter about how anonymous chat had become impossible to run at scale without being misused. We understood the frustration — but we also saw that millions of people still wanted what Omegle offered: spontaneous, accountless, borderless conversation with strangers.
The alternatives that appeared afterward mostly fell into two camps: either heavy data-collecting "dating" platforms that demanded sign-ups and funneled you into subscriptions, or abandoned clones with zero moderation and rampant abuse. Neither felt right.
How LurkCam is different
We designed LurkCam around three principles:
- No accounts, no tracking. You don't give us an email, a phone number, or a password. Ever. The only optional touchpoint is a subscription — and even then, we only store the email you give Stripe for billing. It's never linked to your chats.
- Peer-to-peer video. Your video and audio travel directly between you and your match over WebRTC. Our servers only handle signaling — the initial handshake. The actual video stream never touches our infrastructure.
- Real moderation. Anonymous chat has to balance freedom with safety. We use one-click reporting, a suspect-user blur that hides strangers with multiple recent reports, and layered enforcement to keep repeat offenders out.
Privacy in practice
When you visit LurkCam, any identifying technical signals we receive are hashed with a server-side secret before being written to any database — we never store raw identifiers. Those hashes are used only for moderation and abuse prevention. Chat messages are never stored. Video and audio are never recorded.
How we make money
Running a video chat platform costs money — servers, bandwidth, TURN infrastructure for WebRTC NAT traversal, moderation, and development. The free tier covers what most users need. Basic ($2/day, $7/week, $15/month) adds country filters. Premium ($5/day, $15/week, $30/month) adds gender filters and priority matching. That's the whole business model: no ads, no data resale, no dark patterns.
Who we are
LurkCam is built by a small independent team that believes privacy-first services are still possible. We're not VC-backed. We don't have a marketing department. We're just engineers who wanted the thing we used to love to exist again — better this time.
